Compared to the average peasant in 1208 Switzerland, our Grogs live a decent,
sometimes better than decent life. While they have to live in the presence of really
ookie people like the Magi of the order, they get really good fireworks displays once in a
while. Here are some of the key Grogs who live with
us at Scopulus Incanus:
The Turb
Robert Il Draco (Turb Captain):
Former mercenary from Milan, Robert broke his word and left for the Empire this spring.
While stricken by an illness, he came under the care of the magi and became their turb
leader.
Gavfryth (Gav) MacEwan (Squad Leader):
Stern leader of Jebtha's Welsh contingent. Demoted to squad captain with the
integration of the different groups into one covenant. Married to Molly MacEwan.
Blog: Shield grog. Obese and
slovenly, but a competent bodyguard. Friend of Tyfid.
Tyfid: Manic but wily shield grog,
quick with a dagger. Best friend of Blog, who often keeps him in line with matters
pertaining to the magi.
Lleyn ap Dubric: Dubric's son. Dubric is training him in the
use of the bow in hopes that he will one day become as great a bowman as he once
was. Lleyn, however, has other ideas.
Nath Ab Osmail (Deceased): Former man-at-arms for a Welsh baron,
Nath was disgraced when he abandoned his post to save his own life. Now branded a
coward, Nath constantly tries to prove his own bravery. Stabbed August 2, 1218 while
bravely defending the covenant's lab equipment from brigands.
Wigstan Pepperey: Shield grog who fancies himself to be an
entertainer. Annoys others with his incompetent juggling and joke-telling, but his skill
at the lute often provides fireside entertainment for the turb.
Gruffydd ap Llywelyn: A hunter from
the hills of the Asylum. He volunteered to get out of Wales, fearing the growing
troubles in Wales since the death of Lord Rhys and the threat of disintegration in
Southern Wales.
Deinol of Powys: Shield grog. Former squire for a crusader,
he found religion one winter while staying in Rheims. He is literate, and provides
spiritual guidance for the turb.
Dubric Cynyd: Once an expert huntsman until he lost an eye.
Now he makes up for it with his skill in setting traps and snares.
Trasimondo di Milano (Squad Leader): A
Lombardy squad leader under Robert and fanatically devoted to him. A bit vain and cocky,
Trasimondo is nonetheless a great hunter and tracker.
Anselm the Silent: A man of few words but could hunt
down an ant across Europe
Guy the Bald: Frenchman with a penchant
for falling in love with the wrong women.
Roald: German mercenary who makes a point of killing animals with
his bare hands.
Waimer: Also called "The Hawk" for his keen eye. Some say
his eyes are so good that they are a gift of God
or the Devil.
Poppo: Scarred by a childhood fire, Poppo spends most of his time
by himself. Seems to have a lot of secrets.
Sepp: A disturbing and stubborn
German man, with a whited over eye and frightening grimace. He chafes under
Trasimondo's leadership, and often prods him with suggestions and un-asked advice.
Nevertheless, he has been around, and knows how to deal with swords, captains, and
magi, so his squad mates accept him. In his youth, he secretly longed to be a monk,
living a life of letters. The whole religion thing was too much for him though.
Andre: Slight of build with a high
voice, Andre is the talker in the group. Fortunately, hes also a good storyteller.
Vincent dAvon: A Frankish boy who wanted
to make his mark by being a great warrior. Born 1202 A.D. in Burgundy. Died
July 27, 1218 near covenant. Urinated in a faerie stream and angered the river
faerie. Drowned
Alo il Sago (Squad Leader): A huge,
hulking man from southern Italy with a shaven head and a deep sense of religion, Alo is a
strange, silent mercenary.
Hugo (The DragonSlayer): A roaring drinker
and gambler, Hugo is the last person youd want to lend money to but the first at
your side in combat. He proved himself in the Battle of the Cave against four
dragon-child. Ho!
Justin: Quick and efficient, the young Justin seems
to have a flat enjoyment in hurting people.
Jerome: Neither bright nor quick, Jerome is the
brother to Hugo and that is the main reason why hes still around.
Eutychainus: A Byzantine mercenary and sailor on the run from debts in the
Mediterranean.
Jaime: A young man from Burgundy who is decent with almost any weapon. Anything
in his hand becomes deadly.
Charles: Hailing from near Paris, Charles is less of a warrior and more of an
information gatherer. His good looks help this.
Gerard: As ugly as he is dirty, Gerard is rumored to be not entirely human. A
rumor that is only compounded by his amazing strength.
Yves: From Brittany, Yves is often mocked for his
Breton ways. Still, hes a pious man with the ability to sense magical happenings.
House Grogs
Karl di ceFalu (The Housecarl): A
young man, but extremely bright, Karl is the son of a advisor to Frederick II and grew up
in the court of Sicily. He left at age 15 when recruited by the magi of Genos Arete. He
has an amazing mind for organization and is personable too. He is the Steward of Scapulus
Incanus.
Molly MacEwan (Head of Women):
Covenant cook. Always seems somewhat tired (and some would say shrewish).
Married to Gav.
Gertrude, Ilsa, Carline, Annette, Eleanor, Margaret,
Matilda, Isabelle, and Nicolette: Local women who have recently joined the covenant
and serve as the ladies of the manor. They are responsible for the weaving,
carding of wool, sewing, gardening, and cooking.
Joan Fychon: A decent cook, a better
seamstress, and an even better flirt. She is known for weaseling her way into men's
games of chance and walking off with their money. Married to Madog Fychon.
(Head of Laborers): TBN
Pendarann: Orphaned as a child but
born to the upper class, Pendarann has spent most of his life among magi. Works as
an errand boy. Also quite good with money, and is often in charge of purchasing
supplies and managing budget. His mincing upper-class ways frequently make him a target
for ridicule among
the other grogs. Pendarann originally hails from Germany, and has acted as a
translator frequently for the convenant.
Gennario Bonnaventura (The Mule Boy):
Animal handler. Used to work for the Hermione Brothers, a merchant operation which
spread from Venice to Liege. Considers himself to be the world's greatest lover.
Hans the Dim: Teched in the head as they
say, and always carries a chicken on his shoulder. Has an ungodly touch with animals
though, and is always in charge of the difficult or lame ones.
Johann, Vilhelm, Kristoph, Jean, and Gaston: A
few peasant boys whose families sent them to the covenant in lieu of fief payments. They
serve as slop boys, stablehands, and other common tasks.
Dafydd ap Gower (Head of Craftsmen):
A master blacksmith. In charge of turning our pile of abandoned buildings into a
world class iron and goldsmithy. He believes he is one of the finest craftsmen
alive, and will rarely concede others skill, even when obvious. Was originally
working for Matthew of Bonisagus' family before he was forcibly ejected. Pitying the
boy, and not bothered by his gift, he went with him.
Erik the Smith: A Saxon blacksmith who had spent
twenty years in Sicily, Erik came with Archimedes to be away from the heat and soft
people of the Mediterranean. Quietly competent.
Gunthar: A massive man, Gunthar is a
highly skilled blacksmith. He has the respect of all smiths who work with him, not
just for producing good work, but for his seemingly endless reserves of strength.
Roguish and drunk on the surface, people quickly warm to him as he tells endless
tales of the campaigns and epics from the far north. Underneath the brute squad
exterior lies a man who spends his evenings under firelight learning to make the finest
jewelry, perhaps one day with which to lure a mate.
Jakob: Barely 18, an extremely skilled
bookmaker for such a young man. Raised as a shepherd, he quickly found his calling when
sent to school in the nearby monastery of his youth. Jakob suffers from a
disfigurement on the left side of his face that turns many away, and fines the outcast
nature of Magi a relief. He is a trusted servant who has sworn loyalty to the
covenant at large, and maintains the Library and Vis supplies for the convenant.
Rhodri ap Powys: A young, but relatively
skilled percaminarius (parchment maker). He is not well trained but seems to have a
gift for making good, servicable parchment quickly. He is excited to be working with
young Magi who will need his services. He was bothering the Magi at the Asylum, so
he came south with Matthew.
Madig Fychon: A middle aged mason, good in
his craft. Married to Joan Fychon.
Viktor: A deaf/mute assistant to Lothair of Tremere,
Viktor is skilled with herbs and the art of healing.
Independent Individuals
Lucius The Moor: A Moorish slave captured in
Spain as a youth, this hulking figure is never more than a few steps away from Lothair.
Gwair ab Madoc: Twin brother to Fagin of Jerbiton. Gwair seems to spend his time
riding his horses and being noble.
Conrad the Horseman, Owen the Ever-Vigilent, and Quinn The Mighty: Technically
part of the grog force, these Welsh knights answer only to Gwair and Fagin. Grim,
well-trained, and obsequious.
