Palimpsest: Quitara Shadeler

Quitara (Tara) Shadeler, A magus of Jerbiton

I was born to the west of London and lived there until I was 6. My father was a Jesuit priest, who became a missionary at 27 and headed across Europe in search of people to convert. When I was 7 we arrived in Slatina in the Transylvanian Alps where I would live for the next few years. Both of my parents are diabolic. I learned a lot about the diabolic and infernal side of nature from my parents beginning around age 6, however it just didn't seem right to me. I turned away from my parents and tried to pinpoint what didn’t seem right and in so doing began to learn more and more about myself while becoming less and less visible to my parents and their associates. I became good at being unobtrusive and quiet.

At about the age of seven, I knew something was definitely wrong in our home and took it upon myself to escape and return to England where I had fond memories of my early childhood. Things there seemed different and I yearned to return to that land. However, how to escape was the problem. I began to look inward and discovered that through thought and concentration, that I could do amazing and unusual things. My first effect was the ability to sit quietly in a dark corner literally unseen by any in the room. Through experiment and practice I was able to devise a way to get away from my parents who sought to inculcate me with the evil of the dark powers. Late one night I donned a disguise and slid away from my home. I was eleven years old. At the time I looked very much like a young boy, being large for my age, yet my features had not matured into what they are today. I am plain of good size and can pass a boy in his mid teens. For the next year I survived in the forests and plains of Europe. I had walked through many of these towns and fields on my way to Slatina and occasionally sought food and shelter in homes where we had stayed.

Nearly a year after I ran away I found myself in the woods of a minor noble outside of London. While trying to catch a little dinner a complete klutz walked into the clearing where I had set my trap, tripped and fell on it, with a loud grunt causing complete destruction of my trap. Being a caring person I quietly came forward to make sure he was alright. In trying to help him up he managed to trip me and we ended up a tangled mess. After introductions Matthew offered to take me to his uncle’s house for a proper dinner. During that dinner, my entire life would change. His uncle Sir Edward Clampett detected that I was studying everything throughout the house and rooms while I was sitting at the table conversing and appearing to look directly at him. Being a magus Sir Edward realized I had the gift and invited me to stay. He took me under his tutelage and eventually into the Jerbiton Clan. He was my master and I gauntleted at 28 with him. We were members of the Stonehenge Tribunal which consists of 14 covenants and Sir Edward’s covenant Whipperwill was of moderate size. The covenant is a short distance from Sir Edward’s estate. It is down a well worn path that leads you through the fields into a moderately wooded area. The covenant is a fall covenant that houses 8 Magus’, had 2 apprentices (I was one) and a very solid library. It is not much to look at from the outside, but the covenant is well respected by the rest of the tribunal for its ability to build some of the more creative spells and objects, yet graciously share them among the other local covenants. Further they are somewhat of a teaching covenant and try to impart their knowledge on other Magi who might need it. They are on excellent terms with everyone, but somewhat private. Everyone respects their privacy because of their generosity and many a magus has journeyed to the covenant for help on a particularly confusing subject.

Additional Background:

My father is a Jesuit missionary for the Church. Originally he was a priest, but at the age of 27 took to missionary work. We left our home in England (at the request of the church) and spent a year travelling across Europe. Often staying a week or two in small communities along the way. We finally stopped in the Transylvanian Alps, his goal was to bring religion to the Pagans who lived there. What the church is unaware of is that dad is a follower of the diabolic and a worshipper of Satan. My memories are fairly clear, but I am not certain of the course of events. I believe that my dad was a good priest until one day something ha[[ened and Mom convinced him to join her in Satanic worship. What made him do so (love for her) or something else, I don’t know. However, I believe that he converted before he began his missionary work. The church saw him as an up and comer and sent him to Slatina where some of the pagans in greatest need of saving were. It is part of the diabolists plans to infiltrate the church with its people in the guise of priests etc… My father is one of the first to be moving up within the church.

By day my mother is a nice old woman who is a midwife for the villages we have visited during our trek across Europe and now in Slatina. But by night she is a ranking priestess within the diabolic order set on destroying the church. Her order directly worships Satan and looks to him for diabolic direction in overpowering the church. What she used to corrupt my Dad I do not know, but it has worked out well for the plans of her group. She got him to worship Satan, made him e a missionary and got his butt to Slatina, all while making sure he rose in notice within the church's hierarchy.

Sir Edward Clampett lives on a small estate in Southern England, to the south east of London. The distance to London being about 30 miles. He is well respected by his people and known as a fair and just man.

Sir Edward’s nephew Matthew of Bonisagus and I became excellent friends during the year we were together at Trevayne. (Sir Edward’s Estate) We were both working with Sir Edward to learn the basics a Magus would need. We were disappointed when Sir Edward decided it was best for Matthew to go study with his friend Thaddeus a Magus in the Bonisagus house in Wales. There is a strong bond between us because, Matthew changed the course of my life and I kept him in one piece while we were learning to control ourselves during that first year of training. We have kept in touch and were excited to learn that both of us had been chosen to repopulate this ancient covenant in the Tribunal of the Greater Alps.
